Outdoor therapy
As an Outdoor Therapist, I am deeply passionate about harnessing the transformative power of nature within my therapeutic practice. The natural environment offers an array of tangible physical benefitsโsuch as a stabilised heart rate, a slower and more mindful breathing pattern, and a notable reduction in cortisol, the hormone associated with stress. Beyond these physiological changes, nature also nurtures our mental well-being by significantly lowering stress and anxiety levels, enhancing emotional regulation, and uplifting our mood.
It's important to know that outdoor therapy is accessible to everyone, regardless of fitness level. Together, we will tailor our activities to ensure they suit your individual needs and comfort.
By removing the four walls of a therapy room, clients often feel more relaxed, less self-conscious, and more open to sharing.
๐ Benefits of Outdoor Therapy
โ
Reduces Anxiety and Depression
Exposure to natural light, greenery, and movement can significantly reduce symptoms of stress, anxiety, and low mood.
โ
Supports Mental Clarity and Focus
Nature helps quiet internal noise, making it easier to connect with your thoughts and emotions.
โ
Encourages a Mind-Body Connection
Gentle walking and physical presence in nature help reconnect body and mind, especially when feeling disconnected or overwhelmed.
โ
Helps Break Through Stuck Patterns
A change in environment can shift perspective, support problem-solving, and inspire emotional insight.
Outdoor counselling can be especially beneficial for children and teens who may find indoor sessions too intense or unfamiliar. The freedom of being outdoors โ walking, playing, exploring โ can help young people feel more at ease, making it easier to engage in the therapeutic process.
Benefits for young clients include:
๐ More Natural Engagement
Children and teens often communicate better through movement, play, and shared activity than through direct conversation.
๐ง Reduces Pressure
Without the formality of a therapy room, young people are more likely to open up at their own pace.
๐ผ Builds Confidence and Emotional Awareness
Being outdoors supports emotional regulation, resilience, and self-esteem.
๐ Promotes Regulation Through Sensory Experiences
The natural environment can help calm overstimulation and support sensory needs, particularly for neurodivergent children.
I will also provide you with detailed guidance on appropriate clothing, footwear, and any other essentials you'll need to fully enjoy our sessions. Your safety is my top priority; I hold an ITC Level 3 Award in Outdoor First Aid as well as Paediatric First Aid, ensuring that youโre well cared for during our time in the great outdoors.
